SENDING YOUR PAGES TO THE SERVER

You will send your pages to the server using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software such as CuteFTP (available for free download and evaluation at www.tucows.com).   The page you want to be seen first must be titled index.html, index.htm, default.htm, or default.asp, and must be in to your root directory on our server.

Your FTP software will ask for the following items.

  • Host Address = ftp.yourdomainname
  • User ID and Password is assigned to you directly by Quicksilver WebSites. If you have forgotten your User ID and Password contact customerservice@quicksilverws.com.
  • Remote directory = your choice of directories within your domain.
  • Local directory = the directory on your local machine where the pages are located that you want to upload to the server.

You will then select the files in the local directory to be uploaded to the remote directory, and use the FTP software's upload command to do so.

SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION

Once you have built and uploaded your website to the server, you'll want to list it with the search engines  submit-it.com where you can let all the search engines know that you've made a page, so people can find it.

Again, if you decide you'd like professional help making sure your website is designed properly for showing up high on the many search engines and is listed properly with the many search engines and link sites, Quicksilver offers professional search engine listing services.

CGI-BIN ACCESS

In order to help keep your information on our servers secure from tampering, Quicksilver WebSites does NOT support CGI for general users except within their own virtual domains.  (Cgi-bin is the mechanism by which programs can be run in response to user requests.)  In the past, cgi-bin capability was used for features such as database searches and on-line order processing, but is no longer needed for most straightforward information-oriented pages. There are free counters, ismaps, etc. available on the web.  JAVA implementation allows counters, animations, and ismaps without cgi's.
